Lil, Not only was it a lot of money, it actually felt like money - big, heavy and chunky! I remember getting them as pocket money - I was so rich!!!

I love chips done properly in lard ! My weight and shape show how much I love eating ! (It's not fair) BUT The way my daughter does them is not too bad. She cuts the potato up into chips and boils them until they soften. Then she puts them onto a baking sheet sprayed with sunflower oil, salts and peppers them and any other spices you like, sprays them again in sunflower oil, and put in hot oven until brown. Lynda x

Pussycat, Your Nans Name Would,nt happened to be 'LiL' would it?.My mother used to have a Chippy in Colwyn Bay Called 'The Chippery' it was in Sea View Rd. They always used Lard and won the award for best fish and chips for many years untill retirement. Hal.

When we were young we used to go swimming on a Friday evening to the local baths in Glasgow. On the way home we got a bag of chips always cooked in lard and then wrapped in newspaper. They were great but mum's were always the best. I'm in a quandry now. Chips or roasties. Better be the roasties as I for some reason picked up a duck instead of a chicken in the shop for dinner today. Duck and chips with yorkies. Naa. Haven't cooked duck in over 25yrs. The recipe says to add some wine when making the gravy. Would that be red or white? Help. Aileen xxx

Aileen, Its best when cooking a Duck to use a 'Trivet' as they tend to be rather greasy,As to the Sauce, its usually 'Red Wine' you get a decent bottle and add a little gravy to it,then after a while, ( if you,ve consumed enough' it does,nt really matter what colour it is,Just enjoy it. Thanks Hal, Forgot how greasy duck is so just been and found a trivet. Thought it was red wine but couldn't remember. Just opened a bottle and having a little sampler. Better go easy on it or hubby will come home to find me upside down behind the computer! Aileen xxx

Hal, OH is on his way home so he can watch the footie on Sky. Won't notice if I am upside down behind the computer. Told him what's for dinner and he just repeated what I said. Duck. Well I think that is what he said. Daughter has phoned to say she doesn't want dinner as she has an upset stomach. Had some KFC last night. I still cook my chips in lard and in the chip pan, would die with out the chip pan. My OH goes on and on about how bad they are for you and should have oven chips (yuk) but it back fired on him one night after I had been on a late shift in my old job, I came home and peeled the spuds done my chips they were soaking in salt and vingar and I had 3 rounds of bread and Anchor butter about 1 inch thick, the butter was dripping off the bread, my OH looked at them so I said do you want one, mmm yes please he said, I said well you cant remember there bad for you and stuck the chip butty in my mouth, thought teach you a lesson LOL I could eat chips everyday of my life, there my downfall
