Christine as far as I know this is a verdict perculiar to Scotland. I believe it is when the case has not been proven by the prosecution but there is enough doubt not to bring in a Not Guilty verdict. Of course being English I could be wrong but our Scottish members will soon correct me. Pat I see I was a bit to slow in my reply but you have the answer now

Can anybody give me any info in how to find out about a not Proven Verdict> there is a family story about a ancestor who murdered a man in about the late 1800s to early 1900s not sure about the date he is said to have thrown a man over a wall and the man broke his neck, my relative was supposed to have been charged with murder, but verdict came back not proven. this was in the Penicuick. Midlothian Scotland,
