Been to ENT clinic in Worthing with M-i-L this afternoon - she's been waiting nearly 4 years for a hearing aid (she's 90 in December). She finally got to the top of the list 6 months ago, but when we took her to get one fitted, they couldn't do it because the fitter thought she could see a hole in Mum's eardrum. The hearing aid fitting is now 'subbed out' to a private firm in Worthing to save NHS money! They wrote to Mum's GP to refer her to ENT at the hospital, and today was her appointment. Unfortunately it was just a general hearing test appointment due to a lack of communication somewhere in the system. We spent almost 3 hours going from one part of the hospital to another, before getting back to the ENT dept where the Doctor told Mum she needed a hearing aid!!! Hellooooo that's what you said 4 years ago!!!! There is a 19 month waiting list for hearing aids at the moment. There should be a letter sent to her GP (but I won't hold my breath!) who can then refer her to the hearing aid place. She has almost no hearing in one ear and severely reduced hearing in the other. At the moment she is using a toy amplifier that I bought about 3 years ago from the 99p shop for my grandson so he could pretend to be a spy and listen to other people's conversations. After he used it and realised how loud it made everything sound he gave it to his Great Nan so she could hear things too. Bless him! Mum has worked all her life and never claimed anything from the state, apart from her Family Allowance when her sons were young, and this is how she's treated. I'm just so annoyed and upset for her. We did take her to a private hearing aid firm a couple of years ago, but one from there would cost up to £2000, which she hasn't got. To calm myself down since I've been home I have been ironing transfers on my son's t-shirts! He bought himself some special transfer paper and printed some pictures on it. He's going to a 'Grease' themed 21st birthday party on Saturday and wanted the logo on his t-shirt. He wouldn't iron it on himself in case he cocked it up, so it was 'Mum pleeeeeeease can you.....................' Turned out really well even if I say so myself! LOLOL Maybe start our own business - ha ha Sue xx |

Hi Sue, my mum has been referred for a hearing test too - waiting list here for first appointment is about 9 months. Plus she says she won't wear anything in her ear !! Am hoping they will stick one in and she will be so amazed by how clear everything is that she will change her mind. Mind you, she will probably be totally deaf by the time it gets to that stage !! Ann I would much rather have been doing that! LOL I used to be a registered childminder for years and we always did lots of paintings and craft stuff. I remember one year thinking it would be a good idea to put glitter on the firework paintings to make them look more realistic. It wasn't! One little boy decided my ginger cat would look nice with golden glittery highlights while my back was turned! I think I'm still hoovering up the glitter! Happy days though and I loved them. Sue xx |
