Hi fellow detectives! I am trying to locate information on the death of an uncle post WW2 whilst he was in the merchant navy. It is thought he may have died in an accident off the coast of China. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where such information might be stored? Many thanks Best wishes |

I always look on the commonwealth wargraves site first for any military deaths. |

There's a register in Kew with a record of effects from deceased sailors and what happened to the effects. BT153 is the index and BT154 the record. The one I saw was 1871 so not sure about recent ones but there was loads of info on mine - Date of incident, name of ship, cause of death, name of Master, name of Owner, name of deceased, date possessions arrived in office (this was about 6 months after the wreck), what they were (11 shillings wages!), where they were sent to and date of sending. Worth a look, it wasn't available online but things change so not sure about now. |

Have a look on the Familyrelatives.org web site, they have indexes for deaths overseas and whilst at sea (I found my Great Great grandfathers in 1920) Once you have found the reference the same proceedure applys to get the death cert as any other certificate hope it helps Vikkix |
