Hi Marion ... this is from the East of London FHS site ... 'ST GEORGE IN THE EAST St. George in the East is situated immediately east of Whitechapel, between Stepney, Shadwell and Wapping.' it would show on the censuses as Middlesex, nowadays it is London E1 and surrounding areas. Maz. XX |

This is a civil registration district of London created in 1837 - abolished 1926 when it became part of Stepney district. It was part of Middlesex until 1889 (when County of London created) and the registers are now in Tower Hamlets. The East of London Family History Society has a picture of the original church. Kind regards - Pat |

http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Stepney/outline.htm St George in the East is number 27 on the map. As you can see it's not too far from the Thames, however it isn't the closest parish either. |

Hi The church of St George in the East is in east London, near to the Thames in what would now be called Docklands. The church is still there. Many of my rellies from the 19th century lived either in that parish or one of the neighbouring areas and worked on the Thames as lightermen or dock workers. Some of the baptismal records for this church have been transcribed and are available on the following website: Parishregister(.)com Hope this helps Sue |
