I have just watched Posioedon DVD with kids and wondered if anyone on here has lost a rellie in say the Titanic, Great fire of London,plague or something similar? Caz xxx

My great Grandad died aboard the Queen Mary in the Battle of Jutland, may 1916. He was chief stoker. The ship took a direct hit, several in fact, and blew up! Only 7 of the 1200 crew survived, nobody else stood a chance. He left a pregnant widow and four daughters. The baby was born one month later, and named Queenie Beatty. Queenie after the ship and Beatty after Admiral Beatty. A famous quote from that day of Admiral Beatty, 'There seems to be something wrong with our bl**dy ships today'.

2 of my gg grandas brothers were killed instantly in a mining accident in 1829, their younger brother died a couple of days later---how awful for their poor mum n dad

My cousin, along with all the rest of the crew, was lost when SS Ashbury foundered and sank off Scotland, in January 1945. It was the greatest loss of Merchant seamen, not caused by enemy action, in WW2. The ship was unfit, and in peacetime, would not have been allowed to put to sea. He was one of 3 who swam to shore, but they were so exhausted they laid down and died during the freezing cold night. He was 18 and had begged his father to sign the papers for him to go to sea, as he had wanted to do his bit. Jay

I had family die in WWI, and it wasn't a death, but my 5 x Great Grandfather lost a leg in the 'Glorious 1st of June'

my 6th gt grandfather ,emmanuel hansford of dorset,was killed along with his daughter while picking flowers in a quarry. the quarry gave way and killed them both on the spot i was so upset when i read it. susie

Many of my ancestors were coal miners and quite a few were either killed or seriously maimed in mining disasters

My Grandfather became a widower in 1917. He remarried a widow, whose first husband and 11 year old son had drowned on the Titanic. This is the story that my Mum told me, but I've never looked into it. I'd have to find my grandfather's 2nd marriage cert to get his wifes previous surname, I suppose. They had both died by the time I was born. I often wonder why she hadn't been on the Titanic with them. Mum died in 1970 and I wasn't interested enough to find out more before then. Intrigueing huh

I've got four who died in the Great War, including one where the crater is mapped and still exists! Plus a couple who died in coal mine accidents/disasters. My mum's new husband (can't get away with calling him 'step-dad' as he's 90 - bless him!) has written a book about coal mine disasters and has a few of my ancestors in that too!!

There was a fire at me Grt Grans family home it was very suspicious and there was an investigation, a couple of the kids died and I think me Grt Grt Gran, not got any further on with it as yet me self, but I have a couple of rellies on here that have searched down that line, Lilx
