Help wanted for ggrandad, a publican

Ive recently found out that my gggrandad John Harris was a publican but havent a clue where & at which pub.Can anyone tell me where i begin looking, Thanks Jenny

Hi Jenny I think the first thing is to try to find him on a census and hope that the enumerator bothered to put the name of the Inn or beerhouse in the column. Good luck Rose

Jeniene, if you give us a few details like the year and the district/area we may be able to look for you to give you some pointers in the right direction. As Rose said, the census is the best place to start, 1881 and 1901 are free at the moment on Ancestry*co*uk

My GG grandad also ran a pub and the pub was listed on the census, Good luck! Caz xxx

Thanks everyone. All the info i have is what was on my ggreat grandads marriage certificate (1900) John Edward Harris Publican ,he was deceased.Rumour has it that he was a publican in Berkshire..Thats all we know. Jenny

There are an awful lot of John Harris's in Berkshire on 1881, mostly Ag Labs, but....found this one..the T may have been mistranscribed, I haven't see the image.. Name: John T. Of course, this may not be him, but without other names, like your G Grandads name and age, it is hard to tell.

Have you tried the Historical Directories website? historicaldirectories*org/ If you have a rough idea what area he lived in you can browse the area.

Thanks Teresa for the info.dont think thats my gggrandad though as my ggrandads name was george and would have been 11in 1881.we also think there was another son called samuel I will try the historical sites next.
