Don't think it helps the youngsters any if they pay little or no board, o.h.'s son has been a swine to his mother and won't pay, he has left home twice, and got hugely into debt, was helped out by both parents, and won't pay that back, yet she still lets him stay there rentfree. Then he swans off to visit a girl he met here, who lives in New York, thinks he is such a clever clogs to keep flitting off to the States, has already lost one job cos he was late coming back. Spoiled when he was younger and still spoiled now, he will never pay back what he owes, little scrounger. As you might have guessed, he is not my favourite person, he has caused so much grief and arguments with all the family, his Mum moans about him all the while to my o.h. yet lets him ride roughshod over her when he is at home. He would be out on his ear if he was mine and having to pay his own rent etc.

My son who is 25 pays £300 per month, which is £200 short of his 1/3 share of the total household expenses. For this he gets everything found, washing, ironing, cleaning, broadband, heating, food and the occasional bottle of wine / crate of beer. He also gets a lift to work every morning.

As you loose family allowance when children start work I just asked for the equivalent, which I think was about £40 a month. They always got it back at the end of the month when they were broke lol. I always put some away for christmas so they had something to help with buying presents, which they always appreciated. Sue

My first wages were around 50 shillings of which I gave mum 30,about 3/5ths found that those first years I was getting off light, for when I married., the new missus got it ALL........Bob remember Mum telling me about a young girl at her work who was recently married,, she said ' What do I do with all this money? Ive never had so much!'' A few days later this girl came into work and had been sobbing seriously, turned out she had tried to make her new husband a meal to remember ,a meat pie thingy, and the meat was raw, the pastry was lovely but she had forgotten to pre cook the meat. My eldest paid £15 a week, it was just a token to make him realise nothing is free in life. His board only lasted 2 years he recently left home at 18 to live with his girlfriend, he now knows how expensive everything is!! To be honest I think they should pay board it gives them some value of money. It is a little like the question of whether to buy a child their first car or not. My son saved and bought his own moped from his paper round and Saturday job, he appreciated his bike, whereas the lads who were given it all trashed their bikes and expected another one! Donna

My 25 yr old half-relation pays nothing, and lives like a king. He gets waited on hand and foot, meals brought to him, and chauffered to work! Result? A spoilt brat with no friends, no social skills, who appreciates nothing.
