I really can't remember what we charged ours but whatever it was I just saved it all and gave it back to them when they married/bought their first house whichever came first. We were both working and not too badly off but I didn't want them to think that they could live for nothing. Ann Glos |

My 16 year old son is just learning the value of money. He is on EMA at the moment. He wanted a new pair of jeans recently and I always get him a cheap pair from Matalans for about £8. They never had any this time so he wanted to go up town to shop for them. FOund a pair he liked but when he saw the price tag he said he would make do with the ones he has until Matalan have some more. No way would he spend £50 on a pair of jeans. lol Think he was shocked but realised why I always shop around |

I too had to give my mum my unopened pay packet - that was the norm back then. She took a third for my keep and saved a third for me, the rest was mine to do as I wished. The savings went a good way to putting a deposit on our first house when I married. My own daughters followed the same rule - one got her first car out of her savings, the other put hers towards the deposit on her house and the third blew the lot on a year's stay in Thailand. To anyone living at home, who thinks they are paying 'too much' - hey, why not move out then? OC |

Hi Joy My daur goes grocery shopping for me at the end of the month and gets in about £100 pounds worth of food etc Really helpful for me because I HATE shopping and have usually spent all my wages by then. Her friends normally give their parents around £25 a week, none of them have well paid jobs down here in Cornwall, so would say thats about 25% of their wages. xx |

joy a good way is to work out what they need without being left short so they can enjoy themselves. then take a percentage of the rest even if it is more than is needed and put some away so they get used to fact that it costs to live. then when they have to fend for themselves its not quite a shock. i used to give my mum a third of my take home pay! |

This brings back memories of when I first started work at almost 17 - took my first wage packet home unopened and gave it to my mom - not really from choice - her words were she gave her mom her wage packet until she was 18 and if it was good enough for her it was good enough for me. Mom gave me pocket money and you know something I was the only one the day before payday who had any money left. My two sons would not agree to this - I wonder why? Mary in Spain xx |

To be honest I never charged mine, I left it to them to decide as to how much they thought they should pay and they were more than generous---I supose it wouldn't work for everyone one though. A lot would depend on how much they earned ect. C x |
