Happy New Year, any New Year's resolutions Paul ? :) 'The holiday of Samhain, pronounced “sow-inn” or “sow-een”, is Scots Gaelic for “summer’s end.” This major Sabbat lies opposite Beltane, and represents more the end of the old year rather than the start of the new one. Some old Celtic traditions don’t celebrate the new year until Yule, leaving the period from Samhain to the winter solstice as a magical time outside of time. Blended over the years, there are many other names for this holiday and other incorporated into it including Halloween, All Hallow’s Eve, Shadowfest, Martinmas, Old Hallowmas and the Day of the Dead. Many of these holidays honor the souls of the dead, with the ancient belief being that the veil between the human and spirit worlds are the thinnest at this time of year. '

thought that was April! hence April fools day. If I remember rightley we are at the start on Samhain where the vail between the worlds of life and death is at it thinest and souls can cross the vail more easily.

You're thinking of Beltane I think, which is the start of Summer.

Probally mixing up traditionas again, April was the New Year for someone and then the calenders changed it to January so only 'fools' celerbrated the New year in April. Most of what I remember of the Pagan calender is what I researched for a peice of English coursework about 5 years ago (never did finish the story though)

Samhein (Halloween) means November Eve, in Irish Galic. It represents when the Pagan god dies, as a sacrifice for the world (The harvest) and prepares to be roborn to the Goddess on Mid-winter.
