Winter Drawers Ever Near | Report | 27 Oct 2006 21:10 |
Been reading that Gordon Brown has been writing a book, which has been five years in the making. It is about people he finds inspirational. It’s called Courage of Heroes and due to be published in May next year. Must admit I do admire his choices and look forward to reading it. Eric Liddell the 1924 Scottish Olympic runner (Chariots of Fire) who became a missionary in China and died in a prison camp in 1943. Edith Cavell, nurse, executed by a German firing squad for helping 200 Allied prisoners escape during WW1. Raoul Wallenberg, Swedish diplomat who saved over 100,000 Hungarian Jews from the Nazi death camps and died at the hands of the Soviets while in their custody. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian who was executed for helping Jews escape the Nazis during WW2. Other famous people include Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy and Todd Beamer a passenger on the doomed UA Flight 93 who led other passengers in storming the highjacked plane during the 9/11 attacks. A spokesman for Mr Brown, who hails from a deeply religious Scottish Protestant background, says he has always been a great admirer of people who demonstrated courage and strength when others would have stayed silent and done nothing. I second that. Aileen xxx |
