Did anybody else watch it? It change my view on him completely, thought he was just a daft man. Now know he was a good man badly used |

Hi Lynda,I saw it, I actually felt very sorry for him, she was such an evil manipulator and he was just a good man,a bit naive but good. |

Didn't watch it - but from what I know of him, he started out as a journalist and wrote a classic, scholarly book on the Irish Treaty negotiations 1921. I think he is a man with strong religious convictions and has thought deeply about his philosophy, rather than being a crank. Jay |

Hindley and Brady were both evil. I heard one of the tape recordings many years ago when Brady was raping a victim and Hindley comforting the child saying it would soon be over. I will never forget it! |

Both Lynda! But to be honest I think she was the worst, the mere fact she was A woman makes it all the more EVIL! Brady is a psychopath,Hindley just pure evil. |

I think there is something infinitely more evil about a woman who takes part in these crimes. And - call me a crazy old woman, but I wonder if she really IS dead? OC |

I did'nt realise that he still carried on prison visiting into his 90s, and yes I agree both were/are evil. |

Having just read other peoples' replies. I take it it was a programme about Myra Hindley? He came in for a lot of stick about that, due to his views on prison reform. He is an intellectual, who would find it difficult to see, morally, why she should be treated differently from other prisoners in a mainstream jail. He was not alone in his views - I am not stating a personal opinion, nor wishing to start a debate on the rights and wrongs of Myra Hindley - I am just commenting on the fact that many 'thinkers' found this a thorny moral issue. Hi Jay,No it was about Lord Longford. To be honest I always thought he was just mad to want to give her a chance. But the story(if true) was that he was a very religious man who thought everyone deserved a chance. not my view by any means. But Boy did she manipulate that man, sad for him in the end. |

Scarlett >>was she treated any differently to other prisoners?<< Well, yes, she was. She had a comfortable well-equipped prison cell, took several Open University Degrees, corresponded with hundreds of people, wrote a book, did not appear to have to work in the prison. A Prison Governor was dismissed when it emerged that she had several times taken Hindley out of the prison for a walk in the park or whatever. She had a lesbian affair with a Prison Warder who was said to have made plans for her escape. Doubt if any of your average shoplifters got this special treatment. OC |

Winter Drawers Ever Near | Report | 27 Oct 2006 14:50 |
Hi Missed the programme. I've read articles on him before and I think that he was genuinely a very compassionate human being who thought everyone was redeemable. It is a very Christian attitude but I think in this case he lost a lot of credibility and was vilified for aiding her cause. She was a manipulative, evil bitch who might have been locked up for years but as has just been said, she didn't exactly suffer did she. Probably had a better life inside than most of the decent people who walk this earth have. For her sake I hope she is burning in Hell and has not been released. Aileen xx |

It just seemed a bit too convenient to me that she died just as a big row had broken out over whether she could be released. Yes, I think Lord Longford was a truly Christian man, with deeply held religious principles, who was used by Hindley, just as she used everyone around her in the prison. OC |

I did not watch the programme, I taped it and I shall watch it tonight.I did not realise she had so many privilages in prison, she was certainly very manipulative and evil. I personally hope she rots in hell.(I am not such a good christian as Lord Longford ) Gwyn |

Speculation is probably pointless I suppose, but I read a very interesting book about this case by a psychologist. He said that if Brady and Hindley had never met, then Brady would probably have gone on to be a murderer anyway - and been caught. Hindley would have married and had children and would have been an abuser of her own children, several of whom might have mysteriously died. But she would have been successful in presenting herself as the victim of tragedy and in all probability got away with it. He does not talk in terms of evil, but the inference is that Brady was driven (by psychosis) whereas Hindley just naturally had it in her to do this. (He also points out a similar relationship in the West case - had they never met, Fred West would probably have been a 'casual' murderer, but Rosemary West had it in her to plan murder to her own ends. The two together were dynamite for their unfortunate victims) OC |
