Perhaps its me,maybe Im just not arty! but 99.9% of modern art to me is total rubbish, to me art is a beautifully painted picture or sculpture, not some of the rubbish they try to pass off as art. What do you think?

I agree with you, a couple of years ago we visited the tate modern in St Ives. I wouldn't have given wall space to any of it. One exhibit was a mirror dinghy in the middle of a room (a boat). OK it had some arty explanation as to why it was there but it was still just a boat. I do like a picture that i recognise and love most other art. ann glos

Hi Rox, Charlotte is very interested in art, but not so much the 'old master' type. We had some books from the library on Magritte and Dali and Mondrian and went to the Tate Modern last year. Some of it is complete rubbish lol but we really enjoyed it anyway! Even Jamie had fun trying to 'see' things in the pictures. We particularly like Dali - if you send me your e-mail addy I have a slideshow of his work I can send you - it will blow you away! Maz. XX

Depends what you mean by 'modern' art. I lump it into 2 categories - the stuff I consider 'rubbish' e.g. piles of wood, dead sheep, canvasses of one colour with a stripe running through it etc., and the stuff that shows some skill (even if it doesn't appeal to me). I love lots of contemporary art including abstract, as well as more traditional works. I don't like dismissing things just because they're modern or I personally don't like them. A lot of modern art is very good. And I agree with Maz about Dali!

It's a stsrnge club that's for sure How on earth anyone can consider Picasso an artist is beyond me, so it's not just modern art... That said, I'd consider it better than the latest offering from Wales (I believe it is) which is AN EMPTY ROOM!!! I mean - give me Tracey Emin any time....

Art? Or just an empty room?Oct 20 2006 South Wales Echo It is nothing more than an empty gallery, but this exhibition has cost thousands of pounds. The show at Cardiff's Chapter Arts Centre, called Gallery Space Recall, is being staged by award-winning artist Simon Pope. He is encouraging people to walk around the empty room, with gallery staff or friends, discussing memories of other galleries in an exhibition that has received funding from the Arts Council of Wales. While admitting some people might find the exhibition shocking, 40-year-old Simon, a reader at Cardiff School of Art and Design who lives in Canton, Cardiff, said: 'People who know the background and concept of this work will understand it. But I realise that other people will have a different reaction.' However, the exhibition has prompted anger from other artists.

I think all Art is subject to a person's opinion and that's what makes it art!! I can remember my ex-hubby having a go at me because I don't like Van Gogh's 'sunflowers'; hey I don't like it but it doesn't mean i don't appreciate it as a piece of art! xx
