Its strange but we recently replaced a kitchen, and the units we took down were about 1/3 weight of the new ones.the materials are thicker, so in reality there is acually less space inside the cupboards, and so are much heavier..our old ones were supported from the ceiling, the new ones not. But I MUST say that it looks a lot better than the old...........!!~LOL, well I WOULD say that wouldnt I..? (I DO like the self closing doors and drawers) Bob |

Sorry to hear of your problems, Helen. Is it the season for kitchen cupboards to descend? Dawn had one fall just recently. Gwyn |

Thank god no one was hurt, but what a shock ! Still, maybe you can enjoy buying new bits for your kitchen, cups etc, so by time xmas arrives, it would have had a makeover ! Elaine x |

Helen, that's really awful especially after all their hard work. Do you think that they rubbed so hard (not saying your cupboards were filthy) that they weakened the fixings without realising? Putting pressure on the shelves and base might have pulled at the screws and loosened the plugs holding them to the wall. I do hope you can claim on your household insurance for all the valuable china and stuff you had in there. Keep it back from the binmen till you have talked to your Ins. co. in case they need to look and see how much you lost, regarding contents. I imagine your hubby was in shock, must have been awful to be woken by that sound after what he has been through earlier in his working life. Hope you are all over the fright now and can get something back from it. Good luck with the claim, Liz |

The brackets just gave way, the kitchen was fitted only 7 years ago this month by a firm called Simply Kitchens. On looking at the brackets they hadn't been put on level and only attached with 2 inch screws. The firm now no longer exists so don't know if we can do anything about it. Yes luckly enough there was no-one in the kitchen at the time otherwise they would of been seriously injured. Helen |

Helen At least no one was hurt! My mum had a kitchen cupboard collapse once, and lots of her china was broken - nothing valuable, but it all had sentimental value. |

I was at work today when the phone rang, I took the call and was told that there was a call for the dept. I connected the call and said in my usual cheery voice “Good afternoon, Home and Lighting, Helen here how can I help you?” After a few seconds I heard my hubby say “ Can you come home.” Well thinking the worse had happened concerning a family member, I asked what was wrong. Now my hubby is normally a calm and level headed man, ( he served 24 years in the army, including 8 tours of Northern Ireland and had to clear up the aftermath of the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia,) He said that the kitchen cupboards had fallen of the wall and that there was an awful mess. Luckly enough the store manager is brilliant and let me go straight away. Well I walked in the house and the site that I saw was like a bombsite. There was broken bottles of food, mixed with dried goods and cereal. All my best cups in the one cupboard were completely smashed, the 4 cupboards and the cooker hood were all smashed to smithereens and the sink taps were bent almost over. Hubby was in a right state, he was upstairs asleep at the time and was woken by the sound of everything shattering. He has heard lots of bombs going off but he said that he thought that the house was collapsing. It took us 3 hours to clear the mess up, then we had to go to B&Q and buy 2 new sets of cupboards and doors, which took us 2 hours to put together. The sad part of this was that Hubby and youngest daughter had completely cleaned the kitchen from top to bottom yesterday while I was out and all the hard work had been for nothing. I felt so gutted after what they had done. The kitchen now has some sort of order to it and I feel I can relax now. Helen |
