I am looking for any History on Joseph Howarth who Died in Oldham in 1862 at the age of 76 and buried in Chadderton cemetry. He was the Town Crier and Bell Ringer for about 40 years and a statue of him was erected in Alexandra Park paid for by the public of Oldham His father was a Hatter |

Hi Peter I presume by Hatter you mean headwear,Failsworth hats is the only contact I can offer-but I don't think they traded under this name till 1903. Oldham Local Studies and Archives has 'Oldham Chronicle 'newspaper from 1854 on microfilm -ww wdotOldhamdotgovdotuk/community/local_studies I would not recommend going to Alexandra Park alone especially in the evening! |

If you type in Blind Joe Howarth in Google you will see the Oldham Advertiser feature...but it says no more than you already know........my relatives lived in Chadderton at the junction of Middleton Road and what is now Broadway and were hatters..but I have no idea were they worked. Agree about the sentiment re Alexandra Park... a no go area with no police protection |
