I have been waiting patiently for this census to come out because it will answer a lot of questions regarding my tree........ So I was horrified to read that the Suffragette Movement called all women to boycott the 1911 census...... On the night of 2nd April when the enumerators came a-calling, many women stayed out all night to avoid him! Bet all mine are missing...... |

Oh thats a new one, not heard that before. Where did you read that batman? My only suggestion would be to buy shares in kleenex ready for January 2012 when all those genealogists discover the truth. Ang x |

lol Ang, I can imagine that there are going to be some very disappointed researchers out there. It was mentioned in a book I've just finished reading called 'The Female Line' by Margaret Ward, I would recommend it. |

Don't panic to much, unless your ladies were middle class, you should be OK, it was only the women who's hubby had money that were Suffragettes, they were the only ones that had time to be one.....so, if you were poor like most of us, you would have been to busy doing other things, lol......Lilly |

Hi Lilly, it wasn't just Suffragettes that were called to boycott, it was all women from all classes. |

OMG my g grandmother was one of 5 daughters at that time I bet my poor g g grandfather was home all alone. lol I too am waiting impatiently for get some answers from that census, even if it is 5 long years away (must remember to stop wishing my life away) I know it won't affect any of us researching our trees but future generations will come across a bit of a hiccup on the 2001 census. Chris Moyles from radio 1 announced on his show (back in 2001) that if 10,000 people put their religion as jedi knight it would have to be recognised as a religion. Don't know if many did it but I would love to be a fly on the wall. Reincarnated of course lol Jackie |

If that is the case then may I suggest......you panic!!!!!!...lol....just suprised you say that, as woman of a lower class didn't have a very active role in the suffragett movement, as they had nothing to again, so why would they bother? .....interested on your thoughts? lol.....Lilly |

Lily, I think at that time in history there was a huge change taking place, in the way women were viewed. From the book; As the 19th century drew to a close, a new generation of women was willing to stand up in public and be counted. In 1892 a huge petition bearing a quarter of a million signatures in support of the female suffrage was handed into Parliment. In 1897 the National Union of Women's Suffrage was formed under the secretaryship of Millicent Fawcett, bringing together about 500 local societies under one formidable banner. It is worth remembering that many more women belonged to and supported the non-violent, constitutional societies than were ever involved in the the suffragette group. They were known as 'suffragists' to distinguish them, and wore the colours green and white, without the purple of the WSPU. |
