I usually start the other way around - what have I got in the wardrobe and what does it lend itself to? e.g shorts and stripey T shirt - Dennis the Menace: pyjamas and dressing gown - boy from Raymond Briggs' Snowman: jeans, striped jumper - Long John Silver. Having got main items and decided on a character, it's then just getting the accessories to really add to the effect. Following on from Kathleen and the sweep, there were loads of boy sweeps in 'The Water Babies' Jay

My grandson had to go to school dressed in some sort of Victorian clothes. His mum cut down a pair of trousers with jagged edges, tore the collar off an old white shirt and covered them both in soot or dust, dirtied his face and made a homemade chimney sweeps broom. He looked great. I'm sure this could be similar to the Artful Dodger's outfit. It took her all of about 10 minutes to make. Kath. x

How about the Artful dodger? I doesn't matter if the clothes are a bit battered and he'll love helping you cut some old clothes up to make them look raggy. And the idea of going to school with mud on his face.....a kids idea of heaven lol

Hello, my 10 year old son has (just!!) told me that he has to go to school on Thursday dressed as a character from a book. Obviously not much time left, but I need as many ideas for him to choose from (and for me and his dad to work on!) as possible. On the list so far: Peter Pan Oliver Twist The Wardrobe (from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe) Robin Hood Friar Tuck Captain Cook Anybody have any good and original ideas? Thanks in advance. Best wishes Carol
