From a 1939 Newspaper. Put this in your bag when you go shopping ... Here are the maximum prices you should pay for food fixed by the Government. Shopkeepers should not charge more, but keep this list in your bag when you go shopping. You'll know exactly how far your money will go. Maximum prices of foods which will be rationed. : Sugar: Granulated 4 1/2d (2p) ; cubes 5d (2p) ; castor 5d; ...........pieces 4 1/2d; soft brown 4 1/2 d; Demerara 4 3/4d ; ...........preserving 4 3/4d; icing 5 1/2 d; Barbados 5 1/4d Butter : 1shilling 7d a lb. (7 1/2p) Imported lard : 6d a lb (2 1/2 p) Butcher's meat, margarine and cooking fats must bot be sold for more than their prices just before the war. Ham and Bacon have no maximum retail prices at present but the retails prices are effectively controlled by checks on wholesale prices. Maximum prices of foods not on the ration list : Eggs : (a) Home produced fresh : large 2s.9d a dozen (14p) ................medium 2s.3d a dozen (11p); small 1s 9d a dozen (9p) ...........(b) Near European fresh : large 2s a dozen (10p); small 1s 9d a dozen (9p) Condensed milk : Full cream sweetened (large) 8 1/2d (3 1/2 p) .......................... small 4 3/4 d (2p) ..........................Full cream unsweetened large 6 1/2 d (2 1/2p) ..........................small 3 1/2 d ( 1 1/2 p) ..........................skimmed : 2 1/2 d 4 3/4 d 3 3/4 d (1p 2p 2p) Potatoes : Grade A 1 1/4 d a lb. Grade B 1d a lb (1 1/4d = 1/2p) Grade A means King Edwards, Red King, Golden Wonder, Kerr's Pink, Red Skin) Dried fruits : Dates 5d (2p) currants 6d (2 1/2p), plums, prunes, raisins and sultanas 8d (3p) peaches and nectarines 9d (4p), apples, pears and fruit salads 10d (4 1/2 p) Fish : Fresh herrings 6d a lb ( 2 1/2 p) ; bloaters 8d a lb (3p) ..........kippers 10d a lb (4p) Shops selling canned salmon, eggs, sugar, imported lard and butter must put up a list of maximum prices of these in a conspicuous position. Tea must not be sold for more than the price in force just before the war. ________________________________________ My calculations approx of the old money to current ps. Prices have increased slightly - but I think that probably fish is considerably higher in real terms now against then. Keep this shopping list with you ......... and remember !! |
