xsquared -7x+12=0 xsq + 12 = 7x (minus becomes plus when changes sides) xsq = 7x -12 x=4 http://www.(quickmath.)com/ try this site

x=3 or 4 Seem to remember having divide it into two lots of brackets. (x-3)(x-4) x-3 =0 x=3 x-4=0 x=4 Heather

X squared - 7x + 12 = 0 X = 3 So 3 squared = 9 7x = 7 x 3 = 21 9 - 21 = -12 (Negative 12) -12 + 12 = 0 Hope you can understand that! Lyn x x x x

This is simple quadratic equation. For sq sign I will use asterisk. x* - 7x +12 = 0 By factorising we find (x-4)(x-3) = 0 (Proof x multipied by x ; x times -3 ; -4 times x ; -4 times -3 = 0 ................. x* ..................-3x................-4x ............+12 =0) From the factorised equation we see x - 4 = 0 OR x-3 = 0 So x = 4 OR x = 3 You can prove the answers by substituting an answer into the original question : so 4* - 7x4 +12 =0 ..................16-28+12 = 0 OR .... 3* - 7x3 + 12 = 0............ 9 - 21 +12 = 0 Your son/dau should not get too flustered with these problems - they may look frightening but aren't. The knack is to find two numbers that multiply to one of the figures and the same two add to make the other : If the n umbers were +14 and -32 then the answers would be .....+16 and -2; If 21 and 10 then 3x7 and 3+7.

Wish I'd seen this last night I love these! once again for good messure if you checking back Xsqu - 7x + 12 = 0 (x-3)(x-4) = 0 either X-3 = 0 or X-4 = 0 so either x = 3 or x = 4 (need to write down both) to check multiply out (x-3)(x-4) = 0 x*x - 3x - 4x +12 = 0 .....( - * - = +) xsquared - 7x +12 = 0

Many thanks Guys and Gals - unfortunately pc crashed while thanking those that PM'd me so have only just got back on line to thank you all:-) Son still doesn't understand it, but his teacher says correct answer was 3 and 4. Think teacher is going to set him some more to try and help him so as Arnie said ' I'll Be Back' LOL Many thanks Bev X
