what is vol/page next to a name on the birth recor

i am new at this and i was just wondering,when i went on to look for th birth of my grandfather there are numbers at the side of his name could any one tell me what they are /and for eg( vol 9 d page 468)please could any one help me im starting to get confused

You use these numbers when ordering a certificate from the General Register Office in Stockport (you can do this online). This is the address you need:- http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ You need the name, qtr., year, district, volume number and page number. The certificates cost £7. when ordered online. If you order on the phone it costs a bit more. Kath. x
