Well Melanie, tell your daughter to look on the bright side, she will be paid, home with you for a while and for Christmas, and she will have the chance to get herself really well and fit again and make even more friends with the new people who will be on her next course. Hope she feels better soon and things go ok for her. Liz |

HI guys thanks for the concern. She is in the New Zealand Army by the way. Ok the way it works is this, the basic training lasts 13 weeks and they have certain things they have to do before their Passing Out. As she has been ill for a week, she has missed a big part of training and will not be able to catch up. I spoke to her last night and she will probably be home in about a week, then will be on paid sick leave until the next basic training starts in January. They are very keen to make it easy as she is a medic and they don't want to lose her, but they also have to be fair to the other recruits. I know a few others in her platoon have been sick too, but for some reason she got it worse than the rest. I guess when you are all living and working in such close quarters, any bug goes throught them like mad. She was a bit happier last night, but still wishes she could just finish her training now. Will keep you posted. |

Oh Melanie, your poor girl. My daughter (16) is also one month into her army training - or in her case, Army Preparation Course - in Launceston. It's fairly intensive, isn't it. Last week when Shauna came home, she said they'd been on rations and she'd almost been sick herself because of the food. Could it be that, perhaps? That sounds a bit harsh letting her go so soon. From what I understand, they give them several chances in such circumstances. Let us know how she gets on, eh. Take care. x |

Tell your daughter to take care of herself. My hubby had a gastric bug and didn't feel well for about 8 weeks. He lost nearly 2 stone in weight (thought of trying to catch it from him, beats dieting!) but he is ok now. There was 9 people where he works with a similar bug. |

I hope they sort her out before sending her home poor girl, it seems as if she caught the bug wherever she is training so hasn't anyone else in her group got it? Surely that is what they should be looking at. Ann Glos |

She is one month into her army basic training and last week came down with a nasty gastric bug. She felt better at the weekend, but is now sick again. She rang me last night very upset as it looks like they will be sending her home. She has missed too much training to catch up, so will probably have to start all over again in January. The poor thing was so sad as she doens't want to come home, but its looking very probable. If they do send her home, i just hope she doesn't end up changing her mind about it, as she was having such a good time up til now. |
