Well you have just started one and I have just replyed to it. The word thread in terms of message boards goes back quite a while, and is short for a threaded message, or a message which can have replys to the main topic or to a particular post. The message boards on here use a linear thread, but other sites use a different style where one topic can have several off shoots linked to the same initial posting.
