We recently joined the local 'Freecycle' group. Instead of throwing things away unwanted items you offer them as a 'gift' to someone who'd use them. We've given away quail, and a Little Tikes car to someone with a car mad 16 month old. Do you use it? Louise |

Know about it and told my son but haven't had occasion to use it yet. I am sure I will do soon tho. It sounds a great idea. Liz |

Where my friends live in Germany, on one day a month you can put unwanted items in a local place. People then can take what is there. In this way, over time, they built themselves a tandem..........anything that is left, is taken away.......sofas, fridges, anything......... |

Sally I remember that system. My daughter's dolls used to ride in a wonderful Silver Cross pushchair acquired that way. We handed it on to someone else later. Gwyn |

Not heard of that one. mind you we recycle between us and the kids by the time the last one has done with it it is only fit for the tip. lol We do have a place that does old furniture up for the needy and they will take tins of paint you don't need anymore. Our local animal charity shop are not fussy at all they will take anything that will fit in their little shop always gratefull for anything so a lot of my small things go there. I hate to throw anything out if a use can be found for it. Oh and then there is ebay. Germaine x |

I think it's a really good way to show that people aren't all driven by greed. I'd rather give something to someone that appreciates it e.g. the little boy who had our old Little Tikes car was so thrilled that he had his tea in it and had to be dragged out to have a bath! I'm fed up with giving everything to charities that are faceless. I've seen loads of useful things offered by generous people. Louise |

Jane - don't use 'reply', use 'email this member' - the link is on the right side of the page when you're looking at the website Jools (moderator for scarborough-freecycle) |

Yes - found out about it on here and it enabled us to get rid of a load of stuff when we moved house, stuff that was not worth selling but perfectly serviceable. Best one was the bag of beetroot my daughter came home with that someone had wished on her. I posted it on freecycle, said where it was and it was gone by the time I got home at night! My friend at work now does it too. She got a tumble drier for her stepmother. Sheila |

Thanks for posting this Louise. I have just joined after reading this thread. It is such a brilliant idea and I have quite a few things I would like to give away. (our dining table and chairs which are clogging up the garage spring to mind!) Lorrainex |

I tried to find a local one a while back as we were going to buy a new TV and the shop wants money to dispose of the old one even though it still works. Never did fin one local to me but our money situation suddenly changed so have not made that purchase yet. WOuld be willing to give it away when we get back on our feet again. |
