Absolutely. Swap it for Mayday, there are too many Bank Holidays in April and May and not enough in the Autumn.

yes we should celebrate St Georges Day, and the Nelson Day sounds great as well. Yvette

The Welsh assembly has petitioned Bliar for several years now with a case for making St. Davids day a Welsh national holiday. Bliar reckons its not on, as it would be a major disruption to the national economy (Like Iraq isn't). Also different states having different holidays wouldn't work. Now I live in Germany. There are 16 States altogether. The state where I live has 18 Bank holidays. Berlin has 9. The State where I live has the lowest unemployment in Germany. Berlin has one of the highest rates. The state where I live is one of the wealthiest in the country. Berlin is nearly bankrupt. I think Bliar needs to look over the edge of his plate at what other countries do before generalising and talking drivel.

I totally agree that St George's Day should be a public holiday but also agree we need another one between August and Christmas. We decided at my work the other day that we should have a Nelson Day public holiday on the last monday in October (especially as it's his 200th anniversary this year) and that would conveniently fall in October half term so parents could have an extra day off with their kids. Does anyone else think this would be a good idea? Carolyn

Other European Countries have many more Public Holidays than the UK, which I think is unfair. As I said before I do not celebrate Saint Days myself but it would be a totally English celebration to have a public Holiday on St. Georges Day just as France celebrating Bastille Day is totally French. Yes I also agree with the Scots celebrating St. Andrew's Day, the Welsh celebrating St. David's Day, on their respective days. Pat x

Apart from St George being England's patron saint, 23 April is also the birthday and deathday of Shakespeare who I think was voted Man of the Millennium a while ago. He has to be one of our most famous citizens and fully deserves his own celebratory day! nell

I agree, the Irish have a holiday on St Patricks day, so the English, Scots and Welsh should have holidays on their Saints days! Christine

We should have more public holidays full stop, we are worse off than European countries in that respect. There should be something between August bank holiday and Christmas, it's a long stretch otherwise compared with the rest of the year.
