Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 6 Apr 2005 04:42

I was involve in the first on in British Columbia (the first in Canada I think) about 12 or 13 years ago. We started out as a 24 hour relay, but since then have cut it down to 12 hours. The title then was 'Relay for a Friend', but changed when it went national, now being 'Relay for Life'. We started off with 13 teams of 12, our school having 3 of the teams. That day we raised $68,000. It has grown in leaps and bounds since the first one with last years total for our relay being over $575,000. A lot of fun is had during the day. As dusk approaches we hold a candle light ceremony. Very, very emotional. If anyone has the chance to join a team, they should. Or, start a team of your own. Deb

Hiya Kerry I did it last year with my Mum and future sister in law, and this year I'm doing it again with my Mum and 20 of her work collegues :-) its a really brill day, and quite emotional aswell, as alot of people have badges on them saying who theyre doing the race for life for. I will doing it for Gaynor and my Nan who died of cancer when my Dad was 13 years old, she was one of my main reasons for starting doing my family tree, I only wish she was alive to see all the hard work alot of people have put into it, as through contact with 3rd and 4th cousins I have her branch back to 1475 :-) I'm meeting up with her sister at the weekend, my Great Aunt, who I havent seen for a few years and presenting her with her complete family tree :-) I cant wait to see her face when I show her the copies of certificates etc :-) Karen
