I think the English crop is usually ready at the beginning of may. Ann Glos

Always celebrated my birthday (early June) with strawberries and asparagus. I adore it any time, but it's a shame that asparagus is no longer special.

I used to hate the stuff until I went to a friends house for dinner, this is how they and I now make it, wrap in foil with huge dob of butter and place in oven for 1 hour (or until soft), bloomin lovely.

BC, Love it! Poached and smothered in butter, in an omelette with shredded ham, with Gruyere cheese in a quiche, creamy soup or any other way really. I was delighted when we moved to this house and found the previous owner had grown asparagus for the fern-like leaves, so she could use them for flower-arrangements. I just pick the spears when they're tall enough and cook 'em. Lubbly Jubbly! When they're all gone, our local street market provides more. If you're considering planting some crowns to grow from scratch, I understand they will take at least 3 years to give decent spears. CB >|< X

Life is too short, CB, for me to wait three years!!!! Lucky you.....if you hear someone one night when the moon is full, creeping through your gardens...dont worry...it is only moi ....the desperate asparagus hunter... lol BC
