No, its an ancient Whirlpool but I seem to remember that my other half replaced the brushes on his Mother's machine about 15 years ago so hopefully he'll know what to do!.

Our machine did the same thing years ago and it was the brushes that needed to be replaced. They're blocks of carbon that make a rubbing electrical contact in the motor. It was messy in the machine because of the black powder residue that had worn away from the 'brushes'. The brushes were fairly cheap to replace, but the labour and call out charge bumped up the price. Have you got a Hotpoint by any chance we have a Haynes Washing machine repair manual that we bought from Halfords which has been helpful in figuring out what has been the cause of any problems. Thanks, doesn't sound like I'll have to 'Splash' out on a new one then! Just as well really. Bit short of the readies at the moment due to major decorating project and lots of new furniture and carpet.

Hi Janet A similar thing happened with mine recently. The engineer fitted some new brushes and it was fine. Chrissie

It may be the fan belt has come off. If so then this is easily fixed. good luck.

My machine has stopped spinning. I put in a load, set it to wash but instead of spinning it just turns as if it were the start of the cycle. My other half has said he will take a look at it tomorrow (electrical engineer) but I wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what the fault could be. Thanks for your help Janet
