Used to use this supermarket when I lived down in the Midlands. Copied and Pasted from The Express and Star, evening newspaper. Shoppers go wild in aisles after raid Mar 31, 2005, 08:17 Shoppers were left to go wild in the aisles of a Black Country supermarket which was meant to be shut for Easter after raiders left its doors open. Around 50 customers started to fill their trolleys and baskets in Safeway in Anchor Road, Aldridge, at around 11.30am on Easter Sunday until they realised something was amiss. They noticed there were no staff or security, that there were stock boxes on the floor, and – on closer inspection – that the locks on the front doors had been forced open. One honest shopper called Walsall police, who dashed to the scene to round up the customers. Insp Keith Anderson today confirmed the store had been broken into but said CCTV footage needed to be studied to find the culprits. He said that an unknown quantity of goods had been stolen but could not confirm if this was before or after the customers had entered the store. He said the incident was mysterious because security alarms did not start ringing until around 1pm. Mr Anderson said: “We received a call from a customer at 12.48pm to say she had been in the store for about ten minutes when she noticed that something was amiss. “She said boxes had been left on the floor which looked as if someone had to leave suddenly. “It was only as she was speaking to us that the alarms started ringing, so I don’t know what activated them. “We told her to gather customers together and quickly made our way down, when we checked the store out. “It is a burglary and our investigations are on-going.” One staff member, who did not want to be named, compared the event to a Carry On film. He said the store should have been closed for Easter Sunday, and that the last people to be in the store would have been the night shift, who usually clock off at 7.30am. He said: “It’s unbelievable - customers walking around with their baskets when the store was unattended.” No one was available for comment at Safeway. Jenny. |
