Great idea but what about cloning??? My boss has a penchant for No.1 Plates (we have about 30 of them in all) and unfortunately both his personal plat (No.1) and that of his sister (another No.1 plate) have been cloned and they have both received fines from Ken Livingstone for not complying with the Congestion Charge in London (on both occasions their cars were locked in the garages in the midlands and both individuals were abroad!!) The following is from a reader’s letter to a national newspaper. Instead of setting up a camera network to identify rogue drivers, we should adopt the system Germany has had for a long period of time. Under our system, every car is given a unique number plate which stays with the car for the rest of its life, and only identifies where and when it was first registered. In Germany, cars whether new or secondhand are bought/sold without number plates. The new owner has to register ownership with their local authority and obtain personal number plates which show the district where you live. Registration requires proof of ID, residence, valid MOT certificate & insurance. If you move residence, you re-register with the new local authority. The owner’s plates include the tax disc stamped on both front/rear plates and can be checked easily by police. If you drive someone else’s car you must carry the owner’s registration document to prove you have permission to be using it. Any road offences are the responsibility of the owner unless they can provide positive evidence of who was driving it. Under the present system car crime can only get worse, so why is it impossible for us to have a common sense solution before total anarchy reigns. Aileen
