beech worktop oil or wax?

Can anyone help? Have just bought beech block worktop and need to protect it. Not sure what is the best to use. Have been to DIY shops now very confused. Someone there said ordinary cooking oil could be used instead of all the expensive oils. Can anyone help???? Lozie :~) |
