This should be on it's own thread but to help you find out about the records.

All service records after 1920 are still with MOD and not online.

It costs £30 to get the records and there may be a long wait. Here's the link to help you.

1st Battalion the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment (West Riding)
1948 (June) The 1st and 2nd Battalions, the two Regular Army battalions, were amalgamated into a single Battalion.

The Yorkshire Regiment
On 6th June 2006 The ‘Dukes’ were amalgamated with the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Green Howards to form, respectively, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment.

I wonder if the regiment would tell you anything, or perhaps pass on a letter to him if they still have his contact details, and if he's still alive.

You can't judge age from an army number. At this time you could join the army aged 16 (apprentices) who were trained for a specific job e.g electrician for 2 - 3 years prior to joining a regiment or most joined from 18 - somewhere in their late 20s.

1964 is after conscription so he volunteered or decided due to conscription that he wanted to stay in the army and signed on for further service.

Do you know his rank?
