That is the only Gilbert Gledstone who would be of an age to marry in 1935 (which is when he married Josephine). Perhaps as he was older when he married that might be a reason for there being no children to the marriage.

He doesn't give a middle initial on the marriage though.

Both FMP & Ancestry suggest this as an 1891. Later census give his father as a Coal merchant. Rather a change of direction for a Banker!!

First disembarked (in a theatre of War) 7 Sep 1915. He was a L/Sgt at the time. The list was compiled in 1919, by which time he was a full Seargeant.

Unfortunately at least 70% of the WW1 service records were destroyed as a result of WW2 bombing. It sounds as if you've already found what's available.

One further source are the Regimental Diaries which you can access/download from Ancestry. As a lowly NCO, its highly unlikely he'd been mentioned by name but you could read about the military action his regiments were involved in. Military records are free to access on Ancestry at the moment.

The fact that he was awarded the 15 Star meant he first served in a Theatre of War (France or Belgium) between 23 Nov 1914 & 31 Dec 1915. Any earlier & he would have been awarded the 14 Star. Is the date he entered the field of conflict recorded on one of the medal cards?

I'd imagine he also received the British War & Victory medals. The Stars & Medals make up "Pip, Squeak & Wilfred".

My uncle Gilbert Gledstone served in the WW1 and was awarded the 15 star campaign medal . he served in the Manchester regiment as Lance Sergeant and the Cheshires and was Sergeant in the Cheshires.
He never spoke about this to my family , i found this information on doing my family tree.
He married my mums sister Josephine( aka Lois) Hampson there was no children.
So if anyone has anymore information re his military career or anything else about Gilbert please let me know.
