You can send for a copy of his army record, if it has survived, and if you have the necessary details.
Details on how to do that are here:

It will cost you £30, and they may take several weeks, if not months, to arrive.



His name should also be in the London Gazette.

Military Medal (MM)
Awarded to personnel of the British Army, and formerly also to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, below commissioned rank, for bravery in battle on land.
First established by King George V, 25 March 1916. ‘It is ordained that the names of those upon whom We may be pleased to confer the Military Medal shall be published in the London Gazette, and that a Register thereof shall be kept in the Office of Our Principal Secretary of State for War.’ (Gazette supplement 3647)

I have an uncle who won the military medal in the first world war is there a list I can use to research him.
