My grandfather was a member of the dragoon guards who was at the Relief if Kimberley

Welcome to the boards Frederick.
Are you wanting information about your Grandfather or are you just telling us he was in the Dragoons at Kimberley?
If you want information you need to tell us as much as you already know and say what else you need. Name, when and where born would be a starting point.
We are only members like yourself, but we enjoy helping others.
|
You have made a statement, which doesn’t give us any idea of why you have added your post.
Please clarify……….thank you

PM sent to Frederick to tell him that there are replies, that GR does not notify him of replies, and asking him to return to the thread with more info.

PM received from Frederick, asking to see my tree. Have explained that I'm not related, and asked him again to return to this thread.
He hasn't said what it is he wants to know. However, he's shared his tree with me, and his PM is entitled "John Sylvester Powell", so I'll assume that's the man he thinks was in the 6th Dragoons.

However, I think Frederick has gone wrong with his tree. He has this as his grandparents' marriage:

This appears to be his service record - but it gives his birthplace as Norwood, Surrey ???? And not in the 6th Dragoons.
John Powell in the UK, British Army World War I Pension Records 1914-1920 Name John Powell Gender Male Residence Age 19 [ 19 yrs 7 mths on image ] Birth Date abt 1883 ????? Marriage Date 4 Oct 1903 Marriage Place Bristol Soms Document Year 1902 Regiment Name Lances of the Line Regimental Number 6552 Number of Images 5 Household List (Name) Relation to Soldier John Powell Rosina Blanche Bryant, Spouse
The record shows that he was a carman, and joined the 5th Lancers in 1902, having previously been in the 4th Battalion East Surrey Regiment from 1899 until 4/7/1901. Transferred to the Army Reserve in 1905, and finally discharged in 1914.
No mention of the 6th Dragoons, or of the Boer War.
His mother is named as Elizabeth Powell, 4 Pilgrim Hill, West Norwood, Surrey, and he had two younger brothers, Harry and Alfred.
I think Frederick has got the wrong man as his grandfather.
[EDIT: No, Frederick is quite correct. See later post on 18 May at 13:39 ]
Leonard in the 1921 census was Frederick's father.

This is the man in the service record, and therefore presumably Frederick's grandfather - not John Sylvester:

I just don't understand it!
John Sylvester Powell of Bristol, and John Stephen Powell of Norwood are two different people, per GRO and 1881 census.
John Sylvester married Rosina. They had a daughter Rosamond (per baptism record). In 1921 they're living in Pengam - including Frederick's father Leonard. John's POB given as Bristol. The 1921 address matches the 6th Dragoons service record - service no 3215.
Therefore, he must be Frederick's grandfather after all. (Sorry for doubting your research, Frederick!)
John Stephen (of West Norwood) wasn't in the 6th Dragoons. Service numbers 6552 and previously 983. He had younger brothers Harry and Alfred
But his service record says his wife was Rosina Blanche Bryant.
Is it possible that Rosina's name has been added to the wrong service record???

PM received from Frederick, confirming that John Sylvester was definitely his grandfather. He has all the certs to prove it.
|
Has the OP given any indication of why he started the thread?
|
No. I asked him again, but he hasn't replied either here or by PM.
