PeeEmm

nice to hear from you!

I have been working on mine in fits and starts, as different records come on line!

Hello Sylvia in Canada ...................

I'm sorry to take so long responding to you recent comment: How are you getting on with the Cadds???"

I have just returned from a short Holiday, so Genes has taken a back seat.

My Family History has developed in many directions but has NOT included any further work in the Mixbury direction.

I hope you are well and continue to help the many new Genes members who have so many problems.........

PeeEmm :-)

Unable now to access 'sent messages'.......and 'my contacts'.

All I get is the ERROR message.

When are you ever going to sort out your site GR?

An ad blocker does not stop the page requesting the ad and all the attendant delays. All that it does is to stop the actual display of the ad. If you want to disable the ad calling function then the only practical way is to disable the ad server url either in your hosts file or in your firewall.

Rollo

I have said many times over that I do NOT get ads .................. I have a very efficient ad blocker

so that does not apply to me.

and the fact remains that I was logged into .co.uk and .co.za at the same time ............ and one site had no problems while the other did.

My simple little mind .................. and it IS simple where computer technology is concerned ................. tells me that there should have been NO difference between the sites.

BUT there always has been differences.

.co.za has always had fewer problems than .co.uk ............ that's why I have both of them in my Bookmarks

and the distance seems to make little difference .................. as I am further from .co.za (or .co.nz) than I am from the uk

PLUS ........................ most of the members posting on this thread to say they are having problems, such as GB and Joy, are in the UK

I did not say there was no difference between the various suffixes. On some post or the other I have mentioned that the suffix is used to determine what kind of targeted advertising to send. The ad engine is part of the reason for the time outs which cause the error message. By not using the .co.uk suffix you avoid much of the ads and thus may get a better connection. Myself I just block unamis in our firewall and that's it.

I have also mentioned a few times that GRU has always contracted its web server out . Currently the web server is almost in house as the site uses Bright Solid. However BS is a Microsoft business services company (FH is a small sideline ) and it uses Microsoft IIS (Internet Information Service) servers. IIS servers need careful tuning which is not a problem in the world of corporate intranet where these servers are usually used. When it comes to public internet it is fairly easy to poke them and cause problems including crash and security issues. ( Ask HMG ). As a result the request response times are kept fairly tight.

Where any of the following is true (a) very long distance web connection e.g. Canada or (b) slow client or (c) the ad engine is slow to deliver an ad then some part if IIS may well throw a wobbly and the end user will get the dreaded error.

When this happens it is just one of those things, the site is not really designed for users outside of the UK or people with slow connections such as TalkTalk and USB modems. Opening up the response window wide enough to kill time out errors would also increase the possibility of a hack or DOS.

I do have access to networking statistics for the UK as a whole (lots and lots and lots of people do there is nothing special in it ) and it is possible to see the equivalent of traffic jams on the off ramp etc. fwiw one of the backbone networks which GRU relies on - Cogento - has had network traffic delay problems for some weeks. These have been bad enough to upset real time online gamers but would very rarely upset GRU which is not very demanding.

You will find that you can block the ad engine using your hosts file which is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc but due to the T&C I cannot go into specifics.

Unfortunately a great many - millions - of user computers are crammed full of malware and adware of one sort and another which frequently compromise performance. The usual vector by which it enters is freeware, demoware and injudicious visits to sites. Internet Explorer attracts this sort of junk like hornets to honey. I don't blame people - one of the most popular anti-malware prograns "Ad Aware" has been bought by one of the leading spamming companies (!)

By far the majority of professional web sites run Apache which does not give users these problems. Microsoft et al get around the problem by brute force and spending whatever it takes. Smaller companies cannot afford this. I would not hold yr breath hoping for GRU to shift on to Apache it won't happen.

Rollo ....................

you SAY the site is working fast, and fine, and it might be for you, but ...........

It isn't for me!!

Please do not make such sweeping statements .......... you cannot possibly speak for every single user of this site!

I actually had both the .co.uk and .co.za sites open at the same time the other night ............... and .co.za was significantly faster and without the Error message

I do know they are not separate sites, I'm not that stupid ..................... but there WAS a difference between them

Just as there has been in the past when the Australian and South African sites have been way better than the UK one.

I get Error messages, and slow responses about 90-95% of the time .......................

I only post on this thread when I am more than usually frustrated.

We're not going to get anywhere with GR ............ they do not red this thread, or any other.

Nor do they respond to pms and emails

Nor do they seem to be interested in correcting the problems with the site.

You are always saying it does not work rain or shine winter or summer without giving any context except to say you get an error.

Pleased it´s working well for you Rollo.
Bit of a sweeping statement to say it´s working fine & very fast when it clearly isn´t for many members.

RolloTheRed

RolloTheRed Report 11 Jul 2013 10:29

The site is and has been working fine, very fast.
It does not matter what url you choose to use it is the same physical server at the same location. There is no world wide GRU / Bright Solid network.
The url suffix is used to direct advertising etc.

wisechild

wisechild Report 11 Jul 2013 07:45

10 minutes to actually get on the site this morning.
No error messages or time outs so far, but painfully slow changing boards or opening threads.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 11 Jul 2013 03:39

spoke too soon

neither .co.uk nor .co.za will work fast or open My Threads

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jul 2013 19:53

I gave in last night, and went to

.co.za

it was fast , and no Error messages :-D :-D

so I'm back on there today ................. slow this morning, BUT so far no Error messages

even on opening My Threads, or posting on long threads

so .................. IF the size of a Board or of a thread or number of threads in My Threads is a cause of the delays and Error Messages by being "timed out"

why am I not getting it on .co.za site???????????????????????????

:-S :-S :-S :-S

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 9 Jul 2013 01:25

tried to submit 6 messages

6 ERROR messages

Tried to open My Threads

still waiting ....... guess that wil be another ERROR

The problem was much better on Sunday, but it's the pits right now ...................... at ca 1:25 am UK time :-S
