Roy

Thank you for your response.
I think between us we can probably help you.
KenSE has perhaps put his finger on your problem!
I had not given a thought to where you were starting when you went to your tree.
My tree always opens with the 'Immediate Family' and it is from there that I do any moving around or searching.
I just checked my 12 generation move from 1943 to 1490, and it takes just 30 seconds - that is quicker than I thought.
When you are in the 'immediate family' mode, a click puts the father of the person you click at the top left hand corner of the screen.
If you then click on this father you get his father in the same place and the previous generation moves down the screen to let you see the earlier generation. I hope this makes some sense for you as we all want members to get the best from this site - despite the lack of help from GENES support team.
Please let us know how you get on - I hope this works for you....

And THANKS to KenSE for spotting the different starting points -----

Regards

PeeEmm :-)

Roy, if you get Immediate Family view displayed you can click very rapidly via the generations, then switch to Full view when you are at the right person.

Hi PeeEmm,
Thank you for your response, I am not sure how you can get so far in13 clicks,
I start with my son (1969) & click & drag the page down 8 times & I am back to 1815 and my Great Grandfather on my mother's side. My father was on the first page before I started clicking, I have yet to get back to HIS father, my grandfather.
And after clicking and dragging 8 times I was back to the old problem I reported earlier "A script on this page has stopped working....." and everything freezes. If I drag the little square on the tree 'map' in the bottom corner and place it carefully on top of the original square I find I am back to my maternal Great Grandfather (the one I got back to clicking & dragging a screen at a time till it froze) but I miss so much in between.

Yes, I can type a name in the search & go straight to the person as I think the search lists all of the same name with each one's DOB. But doing that for each ancestor if I have multiple edits to do is time consuming, & the mouse wheel scrolling would make it so much quicker & easier.
This forum is for suggestions, & I have now suggested a few times that we get mouse-wheel scrolling. Nobody has told me it can or can't be done. And until somebody tells me they can't do it I will continue to suggest it, right up until May when my membership runs out, or until somebody answers me, as you have done sir, & says they can't do it.

I suggested a long time ago to put the save button on the top of the tree page along side LISTS, it would save a lot of anguish for everyone .

Estelle thought it a good idea and would pass it along ....it never happened so don't hold your breath for any changes to anything, they are just not listening to anything its members want.

As soon as my membership finishes I will NOT be renewing along with many others :-|.

Such a shame as it used to be a great site :-S.

As a matter of interest: just checked in my tree.......
I can go up the tree from 1943 with 13 'clicks' back to 1490.........
That is twelve generations....... and does not take very long to do that!

I don't quite understand your problem!
Why don't you 'search' on your own tree - just type in the Name 'John Doe' and you will be taken to that person - unless of course you happen to have more than one John Doe.....................

Absolutely hate the new tree - still have to change to 50/75% size a lot of the time - lots has disappeared altogether, why are we still having these problems.. tried to update details of one ancestor and had to reduce the page size to 50% to get to the bottom in order to find the 'save' box.

Roy Report 26 Jan 2013 16:19

Thank you KenSE, that is a wonderful suggestion.
Now I wonder how long it will take me to memorise the position of the square on the tree icon for all the other 1855 ancestors in my tree so I can go straight to them to answer other members messages "I see you have John Doe in your tree, did he marry Jane Smith and are we related?"
I suppose it could be easier than click & drag, one screen length and/or width at a time.
But mouse-wheel scrolling in this day and age would be a lot better and quicker.
Maybe our tech boys can ask Ancestory.com how to do it?

Kense

Kense Report 26 Jan 2013 10:19

Roy, try noting the position of the block marked on the tree icon when he is displayed, then in future all you have to do is to click on that area of the tree icon and it takes you straight there.

Roy

Roy Report 26 Jan 2013 05:18

Well I have suggested to Support they incorporate scroll bar or mouse-wheel scrolling into the site, and support say it is a good suggestion and they will pass it on the the technical people. So everyday I log on to check. So far nothing, and no message back to say it can't be done.
I have to drag the page down in full screen 26 times to get to my grandfather. I will need a packed lunch & a water bag to get back to my 10 X great grandfather.
Ancestory.com you can do it, why can't GR do it?
I have 10 ancestors who had two partners. 5 of them can handle the two partners, the other 5 can only handle one and need a copy of themselves to handle the other one. I have suggested GR make it consistent. Nothing has happened.

Hello brick wall, I enjoy talking to you. AT LEAST YOU LISTEN.

I agree with JohnlovesCocoa, I prefer the old tree, it has caused me to think twice about renewing subscription. This time only 6 months.

In the last month I have had perpetual problems in loading my family
tree at http://tree.genesreunited.co.uk/V3.3.4

For a short while I found respite in loading
http://tree.genesreunited.co.uk/V3.2.4 but now that fails too.

I can't load my tree or view any other tree when given permission.

This just can't go on.

I despair of Genes.

KenSE

Thank you for explaining that, it might help others as well ;-)

So it is just a 'hot link' ?

Regards

Kense

Kense Report 16 Jan 2013 18:57

PeeEmm, yes that is right. That is just the url for the tree version 3.3.4. It's what you get if you click on Family Tree at the top of the page.

Whose tree is displayed is determined by whoever is signed in on the PC.

Although Joy's tree may have nothing in it, there are other things to be set up such as the other trees she has access to, which may be causing the delay.

Joy,

I've just done exactly the same as PeeEmm ......... how much longer are we going to have to put up with all these assorted problems, and no apparent answers, on this Tree.

It appears that GR not only takes (little or) no notice of our comments on these threads, and have a similar amount of interest when contacted via Support.

Perhaps BrightSolid are trying to eliminate GR and put all their efforts into FMP.

I just clicked on the link http://tree.genesreunited.co.za/V3.3.4 ...........
It takes me directly to 'my tree'.............. is that right?
Don't quite understand that...... :-S

Angela,

I used to enter all my direct ancestors in UPPER CASE text - but the (now not so) 'new' tree doesn't like that and they all revert to lower case, which I have to say I find b++++y annoying. I have asked repeatedly for the ability to use upper case - and I've even shown them the line of code that needs changin! but to date no luck.

Ken, I suggested to Estelle several months ago that they should do something positive with all the comments and suggestions which members had made on these boards, and then to publish a summary on a weekly basis showing what they were working on to resolve... Well, I like to be an optimist!

I agree that 'communication' from GR is almost non-existent. That is probably the most disappointing thing about them. Even the 'Post of the day' on the home page is 4 days old.

Come on GR, get your act together. :-S

Angela,

I have often seen this * in the past and wondered what it was.

So, from you comments it seems that this no longer works!

Angela

Angela Report 14 Jan 2013 02:19

I would really like to be able to put some sort of symbol on all of my direct line ancestors, so that I don't get 'lost' in my tree and others can quickly see where our common ancestor is.

Up until now I have been adding * after their names, but the new format will no longer accept this.

Thanks :-)

Sorry, I already posted this in the 'Suggestions' thread, before I saw this one.
