Hi, I would like to find out the parents names of Margaret Hall 1834 Norham Northumberland. Her mothers maiden name also if possible to see if I can disregard this link as a connection with the Darling family.
1841 census would be at home 6years old
1851 census probably at home 16 years old
1861 census married 26 years

She married George Smith about 1859/60 and I have found them in the 1881 census. Her place of birth is Workam instead of Norham. I have her children births ranging from 1862-1878, which makes her quite old for the last couple!

Any help would be greatly received.

This looks like the marriage on BVRI:

SMITH, George Marriage
Wife: Margaret HALL
Marriage Date: 29 Oct 1859 Recorded in: Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England
Collection: St Nicholas
Husband's Father: Henry SMITH
Wife's Father: John HALL
Source: FHL Film 1068905 Dates: 1849 - 1865

If this is her on the 61 census, the children are too old for her to have married in 1859 unless, of course, they're George's from a previous marriage.

1861 census
Marygate, Holy Island, Northumberland
George Smith, head, 29, shoemaker, born Holy Island
Margaret, wife, 27, born Norham
Mary, dau, 7, scholar, born Durham, South Shields
Sarah, dau, 4, scholar, born Northumberland, Cornhill

In 1851 George Smith, age 18, born Holy Island, is an apprentice shoemaker in Norham, Northumberland.
Not sure where Margaret is in 1851.

Problem with the 1841 and 1851 Censuses is that neither Norham nor Workam are mentioned, either in birth place nor in where living.

I don't know my Northumberland geography well enough to be able to sort out the 33 Margaret Halls born in Northumberland on the 1841 and the 14 on the 1851! The 1851 doesn't ahve any with father John, and relationships are not given on the 1841.

Here's daughter Sarah's birth:

Yeah, we Cannucks arent very good with our Northumberland geography! And Halls and Smiths aren't the easiest names to find.

What do you think of this theory

Margaret was married before?

I have not been able to find a Margaret Hall in Norham on the 1851.

I did find a margaret Thhompson with father John

I then found this marriage on freebmd

Marriages Dec 1855 (>99%)

CHAMBERS Thomas Tynemouth 10b 303
HAILS Frances Tynemouth 10b 303
HALL James Tynemouth 10b 303
THOMPSON Margaret Tynemouth 10b 303

IF James Hall married Magaret Thompson, then died within a couple fo years, and Margaret HALL then married George

does it make sense??

think my theory is wrong!

sylvia

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 7 Feb 2008 03:23

No, Sylvia, I don't buy the theory of Margaret being married before because on the marriage record she was Margaret Hall with a father John Hall so that had to be her maiden name.
I think probably they just started their family before getting married, although you'd wonder why.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 Feb 2008 03:28

I just wondered 'cos I couldn't find a Margaret Hall on the 1851, and went with Margaret Thompson with father!

As for starting the fmaily before they married ... nothing much unusual there.

I cna't see Mary's registration anywhere though, and she was apparently born 1854 in South Shields, Durham

I even wondered if the family we're tracing is not George Smith & Margaret Hall but George Smith and another Margaret.
Anyway, I think I've had enough for tonight. Close to bedtime. I think you're West Coast, I'm Eastern Ontario. (2 or 3 hours apart?)
