Please can any member help me find details about my great uncle and his family, who went to New York in l922. Their names were Archibald Baxter, born 1888 West Ham, his wife, Jenny and two sons Archibald and James.

Yes please, info. after their arrival in USA. He appears to have left/divorced his first wife, and emigrated with a new family, although I cannot find a marriage for him and Jenny in England. We don't know if he stayed in the USA or returned to England.

Are you sure that he was English and not Scotish?

There is a tree with the same details as you give but he is Scotish, his father is Archibald too

What was his wifes maiden name?

There is a tree on Ancestry for a Archibald Baxter (b1887)married to Jenny Ahlgren(1894-1954 but it shows him as being born Forfarshire
This tree has him travelling to New York and arriving 16 Oct 1914

Many thanks for the replies. Archibald was born in West Ham, his father was John Baxter, and mother Mary nee Adams. Both his parents were born in Greenock. I do not know his wife's maiden name, as I cannot find a marriage for Archibald to a Jenny/Jennifer. I don't think it is him in l920, as he married his first wife in l9ll in West Ham, and they had a child born in 1915.

What is the last record you have of Archi in the UK? I can see him on the 1891/1901 but not on the 1911?

Hang on his parents are listed as Scotish on the English census. Do you think he could have taken his parents roots as to his nationality?

Seems too much of a coincidence regarding the US census and shipping records posted?

Yes, I am sure the l9ll is correct, as my Grandad is on there. Archibald's age is incorrect , but everything else fits.

Have you got Archibalds full DOB? If not it might be a good idea to get the birth certificate as it will help with tracing other records

The ages match up on both records and so do the names so a guess would be that they are the same people. Maybe Archi and Jenny married in Scotland and thats why you cant find a marriage for them in Eng/Wales

There are also no matching births for Archi jr and James in Essex so Id guess they were born in Scotland too

You need to check Scotlands People for a marriage and the birth of their children

Many thanks, we know he was in West Ham until at least 1915 when his daughter was born. He then disappeared. There were a couple of Archibald Baxters going to USA, and we wondered if it could be our Archibald, as we can find no death for him in England. He may have been in WW1, and I am going to contact the same Regiment as my Grandad was in, they gave me a lot of details, and I hope they can say whether Archibald was in the same Regiment.
