I have my grandfather's birth cert. and his parents are Herbert Rawson and Mary formerly Carlan or Carlon. Born in Sheffield Yorks 24th Jan 1887. The address is 18 Court, Hollis Croft, Sheffield. Anybody else have these people?
I have not been able to find Herbert and Mary on the census

Mary's name was CARLAN..and she almost certainly came from Scotland......

The suggestion was that Mary's husband Herbert Rawson died, and Mary married James Horan.
Margee posted the 1891 census with Mary as Mary Horan and her sons down as stepsons all using the surname Horan.
Why should Mary come from Scotland, even if Carlon/Carlan is a traditionally Scottish name (is it?) it does not mean that Mary had to be born there?
Have you found Mary Carlon on a Scottish census?
It would be useful if Verna had the information from the marriage certificate posted here, so we could have the names of Mary and Herbert's Fathers, and also the name of the son, her grandfather,and what censuses she has found him in.

Just to point out that Thomas Henry Rawson is a fairly common name in Sheffield:

Thank you so much to everyone who has replied - I would have been totally lost without you. It appears that the name Carlan has mutated through Carolin to Carlon over the years. It is also a possibliity that Herbert died and Mary remarried I would never have found out all this.
Unfortuately, I don't have my g. grandparents marriage certificate which would give the fathers' names - just my grandad's (Thomas Henry Rawson, born 24th Jan 1887) birth certificate which gives the names Herbert & Mary formerly Carlan. I can't believe how many Herbert Rawson's there are!
