it would be useful to know if any of the census details that have been posted are the right ones as most of those seem to indicate he was born in 1848.

on the 1891 he is age 42 - if he was born Jan 1847 he should have been age 44 and on the 1881 he was age 32

on the marriage to Nancy Brindle in Aug 1886 he is age 38 - if born Jan 1847 he would have been age 39

Please could you tell us why you think the baptism in 1859 is your William as all the above are consistent with a birth in 1848

I do not have access to census records so please could you post the details of the one where he is with his son Clarence

I am assuming that Jello is working back from known facts.
I do not know if he has the baptism of the correct ancestor.
If William born 13th January 1847 is without doubt the correct person, then March quarter 1847 would be relevant time period.
And there is always the slight possibility that he was not registered.

Poster says William was " born 13th January 1847 " so probably registered in the March quarter.

What was the father John Hartley's occupation on the marriage certificate? Who were the witnesses? - might give us some further clues.

Ann, I did do a search for a John Hartley on the census and there was one living with his brother Henry Hartley. it was in yorkshire. john was about 20 yrs or 25 yrs. do you think they could be connected? Maybe a long shot but thought someone might think the same as me. agnes does eem a bit of a coincidence.

i have a marriage certificate for william Hartley who married Nancy Brindle 28th Aug 1856 Carleton. His father is John Hartley on the marriage cert. I just cant find his birth cert. Yes I have him on census with his son Clarence victor Hartley.
