Find Ancestors

Following the recent death of my father, Mr Leo Melling, I am seeking roots. I have traced my great grandfather, Henry Melling b C1836, who married Nancy b C1839 (maiden name unknown) and had at least 5 children including my great g.father, James Melling b 1861.

I suspect Henry's father was Joseph Melling b C1806 and mother Ellen b 1807 (maiden name unknown) and they had at least 3 children, William and Martha being the other 2.

Can anyone put any more flesh on this skeleton?

I was hoping that lan-opc might have the marriage but although it does have marriages for before and after 1857 it doesn't have that year.

If you buy the marriage cert it will give you Henry and Nancy's fathers' names which will help to confirm any census findings.

I think that is a different Henry, Mike. Henry and Nancy are still together in 1891.

Stephen, have you obtained birth and marriage certs to get back to James or are you just relying on census findings? It is always best to get certs to confirm as it very easy to follow the wrong line.

1881 may be a different Henry as the marriage appears to be 1862 and Henry was still with Nancy in 1871

IGI records a marriage for them 4 March 1833 Preston

The tree owner appears to be descended fron Henry's sister Ellen b 1859 who married a John Kelly

That 1881 makes this family a good bet (James is a Fruit dealer and children's names are almost the same as Henry's:
