Thanks Roy

It was Sheffield Archives that said the records had been destroyed :-|

.........and, I'd paid a 'tenner' for the search!

I could not see your men on the list but that does not mean that the records are not their, it may be worth contacting Sheffield archives just in-case, Not sure what restrictions apply? but as your men are deceased they may allow access

Is this what you are looking for?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=199-nhs3&cid=5-17#5-17

The NHS reference is what you need eg NHS3/5/17/156 but the records are at Sheffield archives

If you click on a name the only info you will get from TNA is eg Contents:
Admitted 1884, died 1917 aged 59

They give date of admission, number in civil register, date of discharge, transfer or death, name, marital state, occupation, age, attack with duration and any cause, physical state and form of mental disorder; schedule of symbols used, a key to some of which is pasted in the front of NHS3/5/8/5.
From 1931 registers include the civil status number for certified, V[oluntary] or T[emporary] patients, as well as the general reference number; registers from 1937 onwards entitled 'Medical register of voluntary, temporary and certified patients' are of slightly different format and indicate occupation by symbol only.

Thats interesting Ann

I tried to get records for Sheffield, Middlewood Hospital (Mental hospital - their term not mine!)

The hospital is no longer there but I enquired at the council archives about two of the patients who were there in 1930 and 1941 They told me that records had been destroyed :-(

If you have any tips Ann, Id love to know as Id love to find those records :-)

I worked at our local psychiatric hospital for thirty years - the hospital is about 100 years old and has records back to the opening

Would the 100 year rule apply ?

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 17 Jul 2012 13:56

Ann, As far as i no the hospital is and always was a prison hospital for criminals with mental disorders it could also be worth searching the national archives for possible criminal records

Roy

Edit, Rampton was re classified as Rampton Secure Hospital and not all inmates have committed criminal offences

Gee

Gee Report 17 Jul 2012 13:44

Have you bought the death certificate to check the full details?

I doubt the hospital will still hold records from so long ago?

Is this person on the 1911 census (at the hospital) If you dont have access to this record, post his/her details and we can look it up for you

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 17 Jul 2012 13:38

if it were me I'd contact the hospital first

The records seem to be split between Nottinghamshire Archives and Berkshire Record Office.
