My gt.gt. grandparents Phoebe Caroline ? and Richard Brigden married on 29nd August, 1822, at St. Marys, Lambeth. When she signed the register Phoebe wrote another name before the Jackson and then crossed this out. What was this name? Could it have been the same as the first witness Robt. B......... also can anyone read the name of the second witness?

I have only recently seen the original information and found it by going on to Ancestry.co.uk - then search - public member trees - imputting Richard's name, the place and date of wedding and then looking at a tree named Brigden family. Under source information for the wedding there is the original document.

Their eldest daughter was christened Elizabeth Mary Ann Daffen Brigden but I cannot find the surmane Daffen in any part of Richard's history.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Witness surname looks like Barber to me. Sorry ca't make out the name crossed out after Pheby and before Jackson.

Daffen could be in the mother's 'history'

I have submitted the alternative spelling to ancestry, but am unable to work out what the names are. However, I do not think the witness name - which could be Barber - is the same as the crossed-out name. Which could even be Birthday or many other names, it does appear to have an extra twizzle.

Hi Maddie

Thanks for your information but I have the death of Phoebe in 1836, buial 6/11/1836 at Woolwich Methodist Chapel, from Lucks Lane, Plumstead Common. Three of her children were baptised in Plumstead and another William (1835 - 1837), her youngest, was buried in Woolwich. This all seems to put the family in the same area for a number of years.

The other Phoebe has caused a number of problems - when I first found her death in 1869 it seemed to suggest that Richard Brigden was a bigamist! He re-married in 1845.

I have never managed to find the marriage of the other Phoebe to Henry Brigdon nor the birth of their daughter Eleanor.

Many thanks

I know that you say 'your' Phoebe was born c 1796 but I DO like that post above from Maddie :

"Name: Phoebe Barbey
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 21 Jul 1805
Christening Place: St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey, England"

because that is what I read that crossed out word as! - either that or Barley which I thought the witness Robert signed.

There must be something in this.

Have to cook lunch just now but will be back later.

Hi Mike

Yes, the birth in 1797 is that of Richard and also the death in 1869.

Thanks

Looks like Martha to me but you never know !

I wonder if the crossed out name in 1822 is Phoebe writing Brigden by mistake

On a second look, it maybe does say Martha!

If she was born in 1805, she would have been mighty young to have married before the 1822 marriage
