Thanks I think that all fits. Also the 1841 Census which I believe is the same family, has two men with surname Johnson in the same household (possibly uncles?) |

That family on 1851 shows that Elizabeth was 'Johnson' - details posted by Maryb on 1st page: |

I have looked at a copy of Hannah Lake's original death certificate. Definitely says birth in 1837, Macclesfield, Cheshire. Father John Lake Mother Eliza (last name illegible ??? Matheson) |

The 1851 Census suggests the kids were born in Macclesfield. |

That's really interesting Dea, I have noticed heaps of the names keep coming up in Devon but I had discounted them because I thought I knew Hannah Lake (the second child, first daughter) was born in Macclesfield and that's where she met her husband Isaac Hudson Burgess. I'll have to check my records - maybe I've been making assumptions because that's where she got married and actually I should be looking at the Devon records. |

That makes more sense Mary as the John Lake marriage to Elizabet Pook took place in Devon and all their children were subsequently born in that area: |

If he died in 1850, that would explain why he seems to disappear off the census records. |

Maybe. It's really hard to know for sure isn't it. I am a descendant of Hannah Lake (daughter of John Lake and Elizabeth Pook) and the family legend has that she and her husband followed one of her siblings to Australia. |

Oops, maybe we are not on the right track. This record says the Samuel Lake who died in Macclesfield in 1862 was 71 years old which doesn't add up. |

Seems like a definite possibility. Might have to order some certificates to find out. Can anyone see him in an 1851 or 1861 census? I wonder if he had any kids? |
