Just throwing a little theory in along the way:-

I would say that the John Buttery born c.1840 (who was later adopted by James) was the illegitimate son of Maria Buttery, both noted in1841 census living with James and his family:-

Name: Maria Buttery
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 26 Jun 1815
Baptism Place: Sutton IN Holderness,York,England
Father: Thomas Buttery
Mother: Jane
FHL Film Number: 990849

I would also say that Maria was the sister of James:-

Name: James Buttery
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 8 Mar 1803
Baptism Date: 6 Feb 1812
Baptism Place: Sutton IN Holderness,York,England
Father: Thomas Buttery
FHL Film Number: 990849

...........posting just as still not coming up with a baptism for James Jnr.

Thanks for all your replies. I will need time to digest it all but I can say that he was a brush maker. Don't know whether he married again I'm not aware of another marriage

My ultimate aim in this line of research is to find the 'Scottish connection'. My mother always told me that we are distantly related to the Campbells so before I leave this Rock spinning in space, (which hopefully won't be for some time yet) I would like to find the link.
