Long gaps are not unusual, Philip

In addition to AG's suggestions of stillbirths, miscarriages or deaths tha you haven't found or were not registered, some women just had a hard time conceiving, just like today. Only there was no help then.

My grandmother for example married in 1902, then had 4 children ....... 1903, 1910, 1915, 1925.

It is a little strange that Nancy had the big gap between 2 sets of children who were born in fairly short order..

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 11 Nov 2019 17:11

Could be any reason - deaths, miscarriages or stillbirths, for instance.

Phillip

Phillip Report 11 Nov 2019 17:06

It's interesting that there are quite large age gaps between the children.

I wonder what prompted her to return? Both parents died in 1889 so it couldn't have been their funerals.

Yes. No cousin Janes in the family around that time....

Further to show that that Elizabeth isn't the right one - as well as wrong birthplace and sister Jane - Ancestry suggests this is Jane's marriage , and I tend to agree it looks very likely:

Yes this could be her. I think I've found. I suppose the next question is 1881 census. Will probably next marriage certificates.

Hi. Have tried all sources. Would never just expect anyone to just start from scratch. The difficulty is that there appear to be so many Elizabeth Barrow options whether it be marriage or death. I'm hoping that I may have missed a trick or just something obvious.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Nov 2019 23:43

Have you searched for her by herself, as a servant?

Where have you looked for her??

Have your tried Freebmd, GRO Index, lancs-opc, lancs bmds???

Knowing that helps us to cut down where we search.

Phillip

Phillip Report 10 Nov 2019 20:05

Follwing on from this, we never established what might have happened to Elizabeth (in the 1861 census aged 13...).

(Forget the Kirkman links.)

Her sisters Ellen, Nancy and Maria married Critchley Daniels, Ben Gomershall and James Holgate Squire respectively.

(Nancy emigrated in 1882 to Washington State.)

Thank you
