I'm looking for parents of Joyce V P Bennett - Joyce was born in 1919 but I have no names or dates at present so I know this will be difficult. She had a sister Margaret. The mothers maiden name was Shaw. Joyce was born in Pontefract so I am presuming her parents came from around the Yorkshire area . In 1918 Monica Peace Bennett was born to Mark Bennett and Isabella Rigby - but yet again I'm not sure of the relationship - just going by the name Peace.
My friend is still waiting for information from his relative who I think is on holiday. .. not much help I know.

Although it would appear that Alma Bennett sounds like a female name therefore wouldn't be the father of Joyce Bennett, the birth of Decadia Shaw is actually a female birth (according to the GRO site) so Alma must be a male or the name has been mistranscribed. According to Google, although Alma is usually a female name it was historically also used as a masculine name.

Looking at Bennett births with mmn Shaw in Pontefract is seems that they possibly had 5 children:-

Thank you Kath, I had seen this record but having seen the name Alma I thought it was female so ignored it. I didn't know it was used for males too. Also there is quite a gap between Joyce being born in 1919 and Margaret born in 1932, at first I thought because of the war but obviously war ended in 1918 so presumably there must be more children born in those 13 years. The first names of mothers are not shown on records are they?

Have you ordered Joyce's marriage cert or birth cert? Father's name will be given if known.

Looking at births in the Pontefract area and also in the Hemsworth area where the family were in 1939 it is reasonable to assume that the births I have listed above are to this couple - especially as Joyce and Margaret seem to be there.

No, I deleted my idea of Edna using a middle name. Edna and Margaret are both together with parents on the 1939 register and they are all living in Hemsworth, which is only 7 miles from Pontefract.

A search on freebmd shows many children born c. 1918 / 1919 in particular who were given the name Peace......probably by parents grateful for cessation of First World War.

Is there any way I could find out if the fathers of Mark and Alma Bennett are brothers?
(I am out today so I will answer any replies as soon as I can) I am still intrigued by the 'common' name of Peace in both the girls names as though there is a family connection.
