I can't thank you enough for getting that info. That's just what I wanted to see, and more. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong on Ancestry! It gives me so much more to go on and I can dig deeper (hopefully) into his life now. Thanks again.

This is the record from Ancestry:

Joseph T White
in the Detroit Border Crossings and Passenger and Crew Lists, 1905-1963
Name: Joseph T White
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Nationality: English
Birth Date: abt 1885
Birth Place: London, England
Arrival date: 27 May 1910
Arrival Place: Detroit, Michigan, USA
Departure Contact: Father Jos White
Arrival Contact: Friend Roy Swayze
Father: Jos White

On the image it says his occupation was telephone lineman.
Father's address: 4 Claremont Road, Kilbourn, London.

Roy Swayze's address: 1868 E. Grand Blvd, Detroit.

JT had previously been in Detroit from 1906 to Dec 1908.

Height 5ft 3 ins; dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, scar outer side right eye.

I can't quite make out the title of the box at the bottom of the record - something about "Transport and date of landing and name of steamship".
Info in that box is:
Quebec Aug. 1904. SS "Dominion" Detroit, Mich. 6/27/10

I can't see a record for 1906-8

In my Canadian relative's tree with the info you kindly gave me, he now has a Detroit Border Crossings & Passenger & Crew Lists stating Joseph Thomas White arrived in Detroit on 27 May 1910. I would like to see the original doc in case there is more info but when I enter the details in Ancestry, it says it has no such record for JTW. What can I do next, please?

Jackie -

As has already been said, there was NO birth of a Joseph Edward White with mother's name Coleman in 1888 +/- 2.

So there is no birth cert for you to buy.

Joseph Thomas, on the other hand, born 1884 Pancras, is definitely Joseph & Caroline's son - GRO references are on page 1.

Jackie Report 21 Jul 2018 09:27

Joseph Thomas White - again, sorry! I have looked again at the tree of the GR member who I believed was a relative. When I originally asked to see his tree, he already had parents listed Joseph White and Caroline Coleman, sons Arthur (my grandfather), Edward J and Ernest H but this GR member had Joseph Edward born abt 1888, not Joseph Thomas born abt 1885. As we've seen, Joseph T was listed in the 1901 census. I am now so confused as to who is my relative. Could there be two sons called Joseph born 3 years apart? I think I will have to get up the birth certs and see where I go from there.

I wondered if he might have married again. I also wondered if he went to Canada because his sisters-in-law had already emigrated there. My Gran would have held the keys to that mystery but she is long gone and I never asked her the right questions when she was alive. She went to live with her daughter/my aunt a few years before she died and my uncle freely admitted to getting rid of almost all of her personal items.

ArgyllGran Report 20 Jul 2018 12:19

I suppose it's possible Joseph T married again and had children - but Canadian births after 1913 are not available to us online.

I don't see another marriage in Canada, nor a definite death.

Nor a return to UK. He doesn't seem to be on the 1939 register.

Thank you for looking for me. In the 1960's, a young man by the name of Corey (or similar spelling Christian name) visited Arthur and Ethel, my White grandparents. When I started searching for my family, I thought "Corey" was a descendant of Ethel's sister Ellen who had lived in Canada, but my Canadian relative says he's not in his tree. I now wonder if this young man was a grandson of Joseph Thomas, Arthur's brother, but I think this is sadly going to be a mystery never to be solved!

I had a look for children yesterday, but no joy, I'm afraid.

Doesn't mean they didn't have any.

Jackie

Jackie Report 20 Jul 2018 10:14

Thanks very much. Will try those sites. I am looking now for any children of Joseph and Mary Ann, which would have had to have been born between 1910 and her death in 1913. I am hoping it was one of their descendants who visited us in the 1960's.

Info re Canadian family history research here:

https://www.cyndislist.com/canada/

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Canada_Genealogy

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/Places/Canada/Default.aspx

And others - just Google it.

The 1921 Canada census is the most recent one available to us online.

I don't see any trace of either Mary Ann or Joseph on the 1911 Canada census.

Jackie Report 19 Jul 2018 17:37

Just a quick question. Is tracking a person down in Canada reliant only on being able to access the household census and if so, is it like ours in that they are only released after the 100 year period? Thanks for your advice.

Jackie

Jackie Report 19 Jul 2018 17:19

Thank you so much for that info. I'm extremely grateful. I'm going to pass this on to my relative in Canada who lives in Toronto and see what he makes of it.

Oh, how sad. They didn't have long together:

Mary Ann White
in the Ontario, Canada, Deaths and Deaths Overseas, 1869-1946
Name: Mary Ann White
Gender: Female
Age: 39
Birth Date: abt 1874
Birth Place: England
Death Date: 30 May 1913
Death Place: Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
Cause of Death: Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Informant: J T White, 249 Cannon East.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Jul 2018 15:54

Already posted the marriage record from JT's point of view, showing parents.

Here's the same record with Mary Ann's details:

Mary Ann King
in the Ontario, Canada, Marriages, 1826-1936
Name: Mary Ann King
Age: 36
Birth Year: abt 1874
Marriage Date: 1 Sep 1910
Marriage Place: Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
Father: James Shaw
Mother: Mary O'Donell
Spouse: Joseph Thomas White

So it seems to have been her second marriage.

Jackie

Jackie Report 19 Jul 2018 14:13

That's fantastic - thank you so much. Is there any info about JT's spouse that can be accessed? Was she Canadian, do we know? It would really be good if she was.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Jul 2018 13:47

The Joseph Thomas who married in 1910 in Wentworth, Ontario is definitely your JT.

Jackie

Jackie Report 19 Jul 2018 13:27

Then the GR member who has Joseph Edward White in his family tree and said we were relatives was therefore incorrect! The GR member descended from White/Coleman, but as you've pointed out, there were several White/Coleman marriages. I'll have to doctor my tree.

The reason I am so interested in establishing the correct Joseph is because ArgyllGran has found an entry for Joseph Thomas White in Toronto. Two of my Gran Ethel's sisters emigrated to Canada and I am in contact with one of the sister's great grandsons. Both he and I have the same photo of the unidentified young WW1 seaman and we would love to find out where in the family he fits in. If the Joseph Thomas White is actually my White, he may be the missing link.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 19 Jul 2018 10:47

There is no Joseph Edward listed in any of the censuses with Joseph & Caroline (all posted earlier) .

And Erika has shown there is no birth record of a Joseph Edward with mms Coleman.

Jackie

Jackie Report 19 Jul 2018 10:40

Ernest Herbert White and Annie Pargiter (Hendon) are definitely correct, as is Arthur William White (Pancras). The Joseph Edward White mentioned in another GR member's tree, I have in my tree as born circa 1885. I'm really getting confused here with the Josephs. I have the 1891 and 1901 censuses which I will recheck. My granddad Arthur William wasn't mentioned in the 1901 as he had already enlisted in the Army by falsifying his age.
