Janette ...

it might take a bit of searching to sort this out.

There was a John Twelvetrees who was in WW1 and got the same medals ....

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

Name: John Twelvetrees
Regiment or Corps: Lincolnshire Regiment
Regimental Number: 200280
Other Records: Search for 'John Twelvetrees' in other WWI collections

There are 3 medal record cards existing, as shown on Ancestry .........

All British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920 results for John Twelvetree*

John Twelvetree Machine Gun Corps 144844
John Twelvetrees Lincolnshire Regiment 200280
John W Twelvetrees Royal Field Artillery 85661

From those records it does indeed look as if there were TWO men called John Twelvetree(s), but it does not appear that the actual service records survived.

Now for a bit of WW1 military history.

A man was drafted, given a service number in a regiment (eg Royal Field Artillery) and went into basic training. After basic training he MIGHT be seconded to another battalion, regiment or army section, and would then be given a NEW service number.

The next bit I know about because it happened to my grandfather who did his basic training and then was assigned to the Machine Gun Corps, thus he has 2 service numbers BUT his war records exist and show this change.

The Machine Gun Corp was a group of elite men with a unique ability to shoot. The Corps was set up around 1915, intended to be a group of fast moving snipers, that's probably the best description.

Unfortunately, it was disbanded around 1920 and all of the Corps' records mysteriously disappeared at that time, so we can't even search for them

Now we come to the "any more John or John William Twelvetrees" .............. it turns out it was NOT an unusual name :-(

I looked on Freebmd for births of John Twelvetree* between 1870 and 1899 ............. the age range that might be expected to serve in WW1 ..........

Found your John's service record!!!!!!

The record that Maddie posted above is from his War Service pension record .........

British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920

Name: John William Twelvetrees
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1887
Marriage Date: 5 Aug 1912
Marriage Place: St Marys Sheffield
Age: 28
Document Year: 1915
Residence Place: 42 Sheaf Gardens, Sheffield
Regimental Number: 85661
Regiment Name: Royal Field Artillery
Form Title: Short Service Attestation
Number of Images: 13
Other Records: Search for 'John William Twelvetrees' in other WWI collections
Family Members:
Name Relation to Soldier
John William Twelvetrees Self (Head)
Elizabeth Hill Spouse
John Twelvetrees Child

There are several pages to that record, which basically is his service record. There is NO change in his service number, and no mention of being assigned to another section. So I would think that he is NOT the same John Twelvetrees who was in the Machine Gun Corps.

He was discharged as surplus to military requirements on 14-12-1918, not having suffered impairment since entry into service. He does not seem to have been awarded a pension.
