Member Since: June 2006 Posts: 233 Send Message	The name Change to Thornton came in when the family moved from Ireland to England and was due to the negative English attitudes to the Irish, It was thought that the children would stand a better chance of integrating with a more 'english' name.

Member Since: July 2005 Posts: 10,502 Send Message	Daughter Isabella born 1857 Africa according to census, then Henry 1859 in Lancaster. By 1861 William is recorded as an Army Pensioner. So perhaps if he left Service 1857/8 time then after that is when it was added (did he disgrace himself somehow) I wondered initially if the marriage particulars had been completed wrongly with Monaghan being thought to be his surname and the Thornton left off, buf it goes to the children's births as well? Under what name did the children marry?

	Wonder why he added Thornton to his name? Some time between 1844 and 1861, possibly while in Africa.

Isabella Carmichael, spinster of full age, Water St, Preston daughter of Robert Carmichael, tailor. R Anderson and Bridget Laughlin were witnesses and they were all Roman Catholics.
